BPMSG – One Year On-line

After being on-line with the website for 1 year, it’s time to change the entry page!

Here, on BPMSG.com you will find a couple of interesting articles related to business performance management, from a more practical than theoretical point of view.

Topics covered range from

A new topic was introduced just recently: “Value-driven leadership”. I started with a general article, and added a personality profiling tool (NEO-select). If interested, you might participate and send back the completed questionnaire to get a full report.

In the section other stuff  I post other interesting information, not fitting to the main topic of the site. For example a nice video of the olive-backed sunbird, a review of the Sennheiser Bluetooth Headset etc.

BPMSG stands for Business Performance Management Singapore. As of now, it is a non-commercial website, and information is shared for educational purposes. Please see licensing conditions and terms of use.

Please also be so kind, if you use parts in your web-site or blog, to give credit and a link to my site. I hope you will find some useful information, let me know your feedback or contact me directly for any suggestions.

Value Add and Local Content

Operating a sales company, the gross margin percentage is often given by the reseller discount you are getting from your suppliers. If you want to increase profitability you could provide “value added services” with your products, for example maintenance contracts, on-site installations etc. In this presentation we will introduce the key ratios “value add percentage” VAP and “profitability value add” PRVA.

The Dashboard – Driving Business to Success

DashboardA dashboard is the panel of instruments and controls facing the driver of a vehicle. Driving a companies business, a dashboard should give you a condensed summary, which allows you to recognize critical areas and take actions to keep the business moving in the right direction – provided you know your destination.

Any dashboard without a clearly defined strategy for the organization will be useless. Only if you know the destination, you can derive the right set of key performance indicators and arrange them in such a way that they give you the current position of the organization, highlight deviations and allow you to make necessary corrections.

My AHP Video got more than 10000 viewers

Thanks to all visitors and viewers of my AHP video. Views exceeded 10000, quite a lot for such a special topic. I hope, you all enjoyed and could take something usefull out of it.

Here the Youtube link to this AHP video

Another practical application for ANP is in preparation: The Marketing Mix. Will still take some more time, as ANP is more complex than AHP.

More interesting things to come!

Currently I am working on the leadership topic, still trying to get more people to try out the personal inventory.

You will receive a full report free of charge when sending the file back to me. (bpmsg at bpmsg dot com)

For those, interested in nature: have a look at my sunbird video, its in HD and some of the shots are really nice in quality.

Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)

AHP stands for Analytic Hierarchy Process. It is a multi-criteria decision making method, originally developed by Prof. Thomas L. Saaty. AHP derives ratio scales from paired comparisons of criteria, and allows for some small inconsistencies in judgments.

Inputs can be actual measurements, but also subjective opinions. As a result, ratio scales (weightings) and a consistency index will be calculated. For decision making with multiple inputs from different stakeholders, the geometric mean of individual inputs is used.

Mathematically the method is based on the solution of an Eigen value problem. The results of the pair-wise comparisons are arranged in a matrix. The first normalized Eigenvector of the matrix gives the ratio scale (weighting), the largest Eigenvalue determines the consistency ratio.

An explanation of the method can be found in my video on Youtube.

An Excel sheet, doing the calculation for up to 10 criteria, can be found in the download area. Download AHP slides.

AHP can be applied in many fields:

  • Evaluation of product features,
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis,
  • Strategy development,
  • Selection of Key Performance Indicators,
  • Deriving weights for a combined performance index,
  • Deriving a consolidated scale of importance from different inputs.

We used AHP for the evaluation of weights for the combined service index and  the hotline performance index. We also applied the method to evaluate the importance of different strategies, using multiple inputs from different colleagues, and to find the ranking of financial key performance indicators for the operational performance assessment of our companies.

Olive-backed Sunbird (Video)

SunbirdThe Olive-backed Sunbird (Nectarina jugularis) is a species of sunbird found from Southern Asian to Australia. The sunbirds are a group of small songbirds, at most 12 cm long, which feed largely on nectar, although they will also take insects, especially when feeding young. Highly adaptable, they are the most common Sunbirds in Singapore and are found almost everywhere. The Olive-backed Sunbirds breed in April-August. The eggs take a week to hatch. After the chicks have hatched, both male and female assist in the care of the young, which leave the nest about two or three weeks later.

AHP-ANP practical Application with Pros and Cons

The analytic hierarchy (AHP) and analytic network process (ANP) are two multi-criteria decision methods (MCDM), originally developed by Prof. Thomas L. Saaty.

ANP is a more general approach, based on the description of the problem by means of a network instead of a hierarchy as in AHP. On the other hand, ANP is also more complex in its application.

In my latest video presentation, pros and cons for both methods are shown, and a few tips for the practical application of AHP,  and setting up a network for ANP are listed.
