New AHP Excel template with multiple inputs

The AHP Excel template works under Office Libre and Excel version MS Excel 2013. The workbook consists of 20 input worksheets for pair-wise comparisons, a sheet for the consolidation of all judgments, a summary sheet to display the result, a sheet with reference tables (random index, limits for geometric consistency index GCI, judgment scales) and a sheet for solving the eigenvalue problem when using the eigenvector method (EVM). Latest version: 2022-07-08.

Alternative for complex AHP projects: AHP free online software.

Excel Template

  • Within the input worksheets (questionnaires) priorities are calculated using the row geometric mean method (RGMM).
  • Three consistency indices (the consistency ratio CR, the geometric consistency index GCI and overall dissonance Psi) are calculated. The level of consistency needed (α) is implemented as a variable input field in the summary sheet, and can be set between zero and one.
  • If CR exceeds α, the top 3 inconsistent pair-wise comparisons on the input sheets are highlighted, to allow the participants an adjustment of their judgments. The judgment resulting in lower inconsistency is proposed.
  • Final priorities are shown in a summary sheet; their calculation is based on the eigen vector method (EVM). For the solution of the eigenvalue problem the power method algorithm is applied with a fixed number of 20 iterations.
  • Different judgment scales are implemented.
  • Errors of the EVM and RGMM are show beside the calculated priorities.
  • Either individual participants, or an aggregation of individual judgments (AIJ) based on the weighted geometric mean of all participants’ judgments can be selected.

Limitations

  • The template does not include the hierarchy of the decision problem and the final aggregation of weights, i.e. it is only suitable for finding the weights in each category or sub-category. For the definition of a hierarchy and evaluation of alternatives see here.
  • Sensitivity analysis of the final result is not included.

How to use the template?

  1. Hi, Klaus, nice to read ur posting, and I hope I can use it for my thesis case. I’m determining irrigation institutional performance assessment, which consists of three institutions, namely: Government OP institution, WUA (water user association) and irrigation Commision. And each institution with their problems that can affect the performance of each institution. What do you think, can applicate it my case? I hope I can get ur answer immediately. Thank you, Sir.

    1. Without knowing enough about the project and depending on your objective, probably AHP is a method you can use. I used it in one of my projects to find the weights to assess the performance of organizations. I also had 3 parties of stakeholders involved.
      Regards, Klaus

  2. Bonjour Klaus,

    Merci beaucoup pour votre aide.

Je souhaite élaborer une procédure de sélection des fournisseurs et la méthode AHP me semble un excellent outil pour cette fin.

    Bonne continuation

  3. Preciso muito deste template de AHP. Muito agradecido.

  4. Hello Klaus,

thank you for providing such a great tool.
I’m writing my Master thesis about Lean Assessment and I’m thinking about to use your tool for generating a Roadmap.

    Best regards,
    Carla

  5. Hi Klaus

I am finalising my proposal for my PHD where i want to develop an evaluation model for the public sector in infrastructure projects. I may want to consult you more deeply hence i would be greatful if you could drop me an email.

I may have 40 attributes under 4 categories hence i want to know how i should go about this. How may experts can i administer this to and what would be the best questionnaire structure?

  6. Hi,
I found that this template is very helpful.
Now I’m working on my essay, but the criteria of the is more than 10.
Can I still use this template by adjusting it?
    Thank you.

    Regards, Hillary

    1. Unfortunately, an extension to more than 10 criteria is not possible. You can use my AHP online SW, it can handle more than 10 criteria.

  7. Dear Klaus,

Thanks for this amazing excel template to run my AHP test.
I have 2 questions and I hope it won’t be too much trouble for you to answer. Thanks!
1.I’ve invited 20 expert to be my participants. If that enough for AHP?
2.One of the participants’s result has C.R=45.7%, there’s no way to ask him to modify it. Should I still include it into the Excel? Because I notice if I delete his answer, and the overall weight and C.R in different participants will change. Should I simply delete his answer or keep it?
    Thanks again.

    1. Dear Neo Kung,
      1. Depending on the decision system, even less experts can be sufficient. I have had projects, where I only involved a handful experts (4 to 6).
      2. I would keep it. Usually the consolidated CR is much lower then the individual ones. You can also include/exclude him, and see, how significant the impact is on the overall weights.
      Regards, Klaus

  8. My student in Surabaya just completed Magister Management, and used AHP and template in her thesis. She recently graduated and her thesis was submitted in Engineering Institute graduate awards program…

Will let you know results when they are published

  9. Thank you for such nice help.
I am just trying to understand how this (AHP) can be used if more than one person ‘s choices have to be considered?

With Thanks and hope for an early reply.

  10. The examples and web tool are very nice. One of the problems I have faced when conducting an AHP with people in the business world is that they are skeptical that the output has value or is meaningful. To help convince them that AHP is simply not a “black box”, I always walked participants through an example of estimating the areas of polygons relative to each other. It always seems stunning and convincing to participants to see that the estimates of the relative areas of polygons derived from a group of participants is within rounding error of the actual areas. Would you please create that demo?
