AHP Online Calculator

The AHP online calculator is part of BPMSG’s free web-based AHP online system AHP-OS. If you need to handle a complete decision hierarchy, group inputs and alternative evaluation, use AHP-OS.

Calculate priorities from pairwise comparisons using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with eigen vector method. Input the number of criteria  between 2 and 20 1) and a name for each criterion. Next, do a pairwise comparison: Which of the criterion in each pair is more important, and how many times more, on a one to nine scale. With Check consistency you will then get the resulting priorities, their ranking, and a consistency ratio CR2) (ideally < 10%). Calculation is done using the fundamental 1 to 9 AHP ratio scale.

The three judgments with highest inconsistency will be highlighted, with the last column showing the recommended judgment for lowest consistency ratio. Slightly modify your comparisons, if you want to improve consistency, and recalculate the result, or download the result as a csv file.

Pairwise-comparison
Example of inconsistent pair-wise comparisons. The most inconsistent judgment no 2 is marked in red (Color or Delivery); the consistent judgment would be 3 (B) and is highlighted in light green. Decision makers can decide to adjust some of their original judgments to improve consistency.

Format of the csv file

Fields are separated by tabs:

  • Line 1: Date (yyyy-mm-dd)  Time (hh:mm:ss) Title (text)
  • Line 2: Number of criteria n
  • Line 3: Criteria
  • Line 4 to 4+n: Decison matrix
  • Second last line:  Priority vector
  • Last line: eigenvalue and consistency ratio CR

  1. Thanks a lot for your Work.
Can I know the php code used by this website?

  2. I want to do a paired wise comparison. however I have two “big” criteria. the site says N should optimally be between 5-9. One of the “big” criteria consists of combined criteria. see below

    Criteria A and Criteria B (criteria B consist of sub criteria b1, b2, b3 and b4).

my question is whether it is possible to do the paired wise comparison as shown below and then “merge” the sub-criteria into criteria B? This way i would end with two criteria and their weights. If i want to merge weights, I just add them up?

    A b1 b2 b3 b4
    A
    b1
    b2
    b3
    b4

  3. I have been developing an AHP excel book myself. It gives the ranks, and shows a simple “Consistent” or “Inconsistent” message at the end. Now that I’ve found yours, I would like to borrow your code for recommending pairwise comparisons to reduce the consistency ratio. Without it, it is really difficult to know which values I should change to get more consistent answer. From your excel sheet it is kind of confusing. DO you have a tutorial on “how the recommended inputs for reducing consistency ratio works”?

    1. Zahid,
sorry, but I don’t have a tutorial or description. The formula is given in the user manual based on one of Saaty’s papers. Its actual implementation in Excel was a bit tricky. Overall I spent a lot of effort in developing the template, and its downloaded more than 15 thousand times. Just use it 😉

  4. hello..thank you for your website first of all. Actually, i have to do a questionnaire for finalising criteria required to evaluate a public open space. after giving ahp question papers to a certain expert group, i want to conclude the results from each questionnaire, from which i expect to arrive at the required criteria for analysing a space. is there any way to do that using software ? or do i have to manually compare the results ?

    1. Gauri, I’m not sure whether I understand your question correctly. You can consolidate all inputs from your expert group automatically (“aggregation of individual judgments”, AIJ) and derive priorities for the criteria reflecting all inputs. Please see here: AHP group decision making.

  5. Thank you for your website. Do you have a template for pairwise comparisons that uses more than 10 criteria? I am interested in using 20-30 criteria. If not, is there a reference you recommend that contains the mathematics for constructing the matrix myself?

    Thank you,
    Karen

    1. Dear Karen,
the best way is to structure your project into a hierarchy and categorize your 20 to 30 criteria into smaller groups of 5 to 10 criteria. Did you read my article here? Please also see my reply to Chris regarding a similar question.

  6. can i use AHP where the problem is based on voting, if the case is such that choice is to be made between certain decisions and if 20% are voting in favor of A and 35% are voting in favor of B and 43% are voting in favor of C and 2% in favor of D. So under such condition, How can we calculate priorities based on AHP for each alternative? since the ratio scale between alternative D and any other alternative is too high.

    1. Either you use voting, or you use AHP. One of the advantages of AHP is that with AHP you get priorities based on preferences using pairwise comparisons. If you already got your priorities (your percentages) based on voting, why to apply AHP in addition? So the voting itself should be done with AHP, then it would make sense.

  7. Rakesh, I modified the program: the last column for the three highlighted most inconsistent judgments will now show the recommended judgment to minimize inconsistency.
    Regards, Klaus

    1. Thank you, Klaus. I will give it a try. Also, I am thankful to you for the rationale and references in choosing seven plus or minus two factors/criteria.

  8. Klaus,
What is the process of removing/reducing inconsistencies in CR after the top 4 inconsistencies are identified?
    Thank you for your insight.

    1. Hi Rakesh,
Just modify the judgements 1 up or down, recalculate and try to improve CR. start with the red one, it has the highest impact.

  9. how can I input the wight from different questioners?
here I can find the result of one questionnaire only!!

    1. The current online version is for 1 participant only. Please use my excel template, if you have more than one participant.
      Regards, Klaus
