  1. Thanks for very clear explanations on the videos on both the Conjoint Analysis and the AHP. I have been recommending them and it might have gone to nearly a hundred colleagues already.

    Best wishes

  2. Dear Klaus,
First of all congratulations and thank you for the template. Based on the long list of people using it, your work is helping a lot of people.
I would like to sample 3 groups (students, professors, and specialists), but having at least 20 participants in each group.
1- Is it possible to increase the number of participants to accommodate all 60 in a single analysis?
2- If not, how can I compare the 3 groups?
    Thank you.

    1. Dear Enrico,
you are welcome. Yes, more than 10000 downloads … Extending the template for more than 20 participants could be done in principle, but it will become too complex and I have no plans to do it. You could use three templates instead, one for each group of 20, and then combine the consolidated group results in a 4th one. (Copy/paste the 3 consolidated matrices into the sheet multInp. The workbook is protected w/o password, so you can just unprotect the sheet.
Alternatively use my AHP online software. The number of participants is not limited. You can even send a link to participants to do the comparisons online. Only you – as session chair – need to register (free). The group results (priorities for each participant) can be exported as csv file for further processing in Excel.

  3. Hi,

your AHP template is really nice. You used the power method to validate the matrix. Can you say me the name of the method you use to get examples for values if the consistency ratio is bigger than 0.1?

In your article ‘Conjoint Analysis – Slides (pdf)’ is an issue, I think. On slide 11 the formula for the number of comparisions for the AHP is k * (k-1) / 2, not k^2-k / 2.

    Kind regards

    1. Grg, thanks for your feedback.
Regarding the power method: see my link here.
The number of comparisons is (k2k)/2 = k*(k – 1)/2. It’s the same. Half of all matrix elements (k2) minus the diagonal (k) devided by two.

      1. thanks for your answer.

I never seen that in connection with the powermethod.
Maybe i should explain this again.
You use the “Consistency Error Matrix” and the “pi/pj” matrix to get example values that could restore the consistency. These values are presented in the cells m21:m56.
Is there a name for this method?

        1. Now I understand your question. I don’t think there is a name for this method, and I also haven’t seen it before. It was my own idea to put it this way, based on Saaty’s original papers, where he describes, how to find the most inconsistent judgment, e.g. the article under references here on page 242.

  4. Hi Klaus,

Your AHP template is the best I’ve come across so far. I am interested in using it to frame the decision of which ERP system will be best for my company but I am uncertain whether the license would permit this. What do you think?

    Best,

    Matt

    1. Dear Matt,
thanks for you feedback! The license does not permit commercial use, but you might use it, if – instead of a license fee – your company would give a small donation for a humanitarian charity. Preferably in Singapore, for example MERCY Relief (http://www.mercyrelief.org/ ), but Red Cross or a similar organisation in your country would also be ok.
      Regards, Klaus

  5. I just want to thank you for the AHP excel template. It helped me to conclude a college project in the maitenance fiel. I used it and mentioned your contribution to the work.
    I appreciate it!

  6. Thank you, this is very informative and useful! I am a Marketing Manager in Biotechnology and am working on trying to position our product against the competitor using “Customer Care-Abouts”. This tool will help me to open a discussion with my Sales Team about other attributes they may not be looking for, and showing how to weight their importance.

    1. Dear Viki,
thank you for your feedback, but are you aware that the content, my template and the online software are licensed for non-commercial use only? I put a lot of time and effort into this website free of charge, and would appreciate, if any visitor using the staff for $ could contribute with a small donation to support the maintenance of this site. Feel free to contact me any time.

  7. Thank you very much. I am an entomologist, and I study horse fly diversity in the sub-arctic region of Ontario, Canada. Your explanations were brilliantly simple. I appreciate this a great deal.

  8. Dear Mr. Klaus: if the AHP model does not have any alternatives (model is used only to derive priorities of items at every level), is there a single mechanism to check the stability of the relative priorities (ranks) of items at a particular level? Like in cases where alternatives are present, one can do sensitivity analysis to check the stability of the respondents’ choices.

    1. Dear SRoy,
You can do sensitivity analysis, but I don’t have any implementation yet, neither in excel nor in my online software. A systematic variation of all inputs (i.e. variation of judgments by +/- 1) will show, how sensitive the global priorities react on it. This could be a future feature in my web software.
      Regards, Klaus
